3 Ways Seniors Can Conquer Fear of Falling

Updated: Jun 30, 2023

Fear of falling is a very real thing for many seniors. Many seniors may avoid walking just to keep from having a bad fall and risking bone fractures. But staying at home and never getting up to move around isn’t good for anyone. Regular exercise is necessary to living a healthy life. Seniors need to be able to move around their homes without fear. Here are a few ways you can conquer a fear of falling.

1. Live in Assisted Living

If you have a fear of falling, moving to an assisted living community might be the right choice for you. Assisted living is independent living for seniors who want to continue to live independently while having the option to get some help with certain tasks of daily living. In an assisted living community, maneuvering around may be easier for those who have some difficulty walking or standing. Lighting, hand rails, and other amenities are assisted living features designed to help those who may need a little help getting around.

2. Practice Balance Training

Making an appointment with the right physical therapist can be the best thing you do for yourself if you are prone to falls. The physical therapist can assess your capabilities and come up with a training and therapy plan to help you gain better balance. Often times, practicing a list of simple balance exercises daily can help you to strengthen your muscles and prevent falls. Before you try any exercises on your own, make sure you talk to your doctor about what is safe and healthy for your body.

3. Get a Walking Aid

Having an walking aid item like a cane can make a huge difference in giving you the confidence to go out and walk around on your own. Many canes fold up easily when not in use, allowing you to store them easily. For those who still have difficulty walking with a cane, wheeled walkers with a seat are a great choice. The handles on the back allow you to walk with extra support, while the seat in the front offers you a place to stop and rest whenever necessary.
