When it comes to your senior parents, the choice to move them at any time can be a difficult one. So when your senior loved one has had a hospital or rehab stay, is it time to move them directly into assisted living, or should you wait?
Look for Signs
Making the decision to move your senior mom to assisted living should be considered very seriously. Every situation is different. Once Mom’s stay at a hospital or rehab is coming to a close, look for signs. Do you have any or several of the following concerns:
Escalating care needs
Changes in personality; aggression, severe mood swings, or depression
Safety concerns; trouble getting around or inability to drive
Stress on you as caregiver
Wandering or frequently getting lost
Do Research and Have a Plan
No matter what your final decision may be, it is worth it to take some time and research exactly where you are most comfortable with Mom living. If you can, start looking into assisted living while your senior mom is still in the hospital or rehab facility. You’ll need to explore different assisted living communities in your area. Call those communities and ask for a tour. Ask questions. You can download a printable checklist here that can help you on your search for a new home.
Remember that everybody is different. What works for one person may not work for another. Gather together as a family and discuss all of your options. If you can, get everyone on the same page and then go from there. This decision is a process that will take some time and patience. – Posted by Lana Crews | Jan 27, 2018 – The Cottages Blog
